Lens index vs lens thickness

Standard lenses 1.5 index ( CR39 )

1.5 index ( standard lenses ) - standard plastic lenses recommended for sphere powers up to +/- 3.00 on your prescription. They can be used for powers up to +/-6 if wanted ( ask first because they may be thick with higher prescriptions ).

  • These lenses are not suitable to use with rimless frames because they are to fragile and easy to crack

  • All coatings available, they are easy to tint, so great if you want tinted lenses.

  • Transitions,  transitions XTRActive and Polarized

  • Can be used for Single Vision, Bifocal or Varifocal

High index lenses

( index 1.6, 1.67 and 1.74 )

High index lenses are made of different, higher density plastic material then standard CR39 lenses.  These lenses are thinner and lighter because they have ability to bend light more so the higher the lens index you choose to your prescription the thinner and lighter lens you get.

Thin lenses (1.6 index ) - recommended for sphere powers over

+/- 3.00 on your prescription.

  • about 25% thinner than standard  1.5 index lenses

  • These lenses are good for all applications

  • All coatings and tints are available

  • Transitions, XTRActive and Polarized

  • Can be used for Single Vision, Bifocal and Varifocal

Super thin lenses (1.67 index ) - recommended for sphere powers over +/- 4.00 on your prescription.

  • about 33% thinner than standard lenses

  • These lenses are good for all applications

  • All coatings and tints are available

  • Transitions, XTRActive and Polarized

  • Can be used for Single Vision, Bifocal and Varifocal

Ultra thin lenses ( 1.74 index ) - recommended for sphere powers over +/- 6.00 on your prescription.

  • about 45% thinner than standard lenses

  • These lenses are great for high prescriptions

  • All coatings available and some tints are available

  • Transitions available in grey or brown only

  • Can be used for Single Vision and Varifocal glasses

1.59 Polycarbonate - Recommended for rimless and sport glasses for sphere powers up to +/- 4.00

  •  about 25% thinner than standard lenses
